How to be a great college lecturer

To be a great college lecturer you need to engage your audience. Teaching older students may require a different approach than teaching primary school children for example and therefore you may need time to adjust to this method of teaching.

The first five minutes of your lecture are often the most important, this is where you can really get the attention of the pupil’s ad get them interested in what you are going to be talking about. Briefly introduce yourself, give an overview of the topics you are going to be discussing and the value of the information that they will learn. Start off with passion and enthusiasm and this will pass on to your students.

Curiosity can work well with students, so when starting off your lectures, try and give them an interesting fact or ask them a question which you think they will want to (but probably don’t already) know the answer too. This will ensure that you have their attention. If you notice many students looking away, becoming distracted or chatting from the off, it may be that you need to make things a little more interesting.
